DAMP REPAIRS · DORSET

Damp repairs, fixed at the source.

Water gets in through a failed seal long before you see a stain. We find where it is coming in, replace what it has damaged and reseal your motorhome, campervan or caravan so it stays dry.

02  —  Know the signs

Six signs of damp

Here is what to smell, touch and look for, and where to check first.

01

A musty smell

Strongest after the van has been shut up, and it comes back however much you air it.

Check: Whole van
02

Soft or spongy walls

Press gently with your thumb. Wallboard that gives has taken on water.

Check: Windows and corners
03

Stains and marks

Blue, grey or brown patches on the ceiling or wallboard that slowly spread.

Check: Overhead lockers
04

Rippled panels

The vinyl face of the wallboard lifts and wrinkles as the board behind swells.

Check: Below windows
05

Black mould spots

Small black specks that return after cleaning, where the air does not move.

Check: Cupboard backs
06

A floor that flexes

A bouncy or creaking patch that was not there last season.

Check: Door and washroom
03  —  The numbers

What the readings mean

Every damp check ends with a written report showing the reading at each point.

Keep an eye on it
15–20%

Water is getting in. The source needs finding and the affected area opening up.

05  —  How it works

Four steps to a dry van

1

Damp check

We take moisture readings across the walls, ceiling and floor, and around every window, rooflight and locker.

2

Trace the source

A high reading shows where water ended up, not where it got in. We follow it back to the failed seal or seam.

3

Strip and rebuild

Wet wallboard, insulation and rotten timber come out. Once dry, we rebuild with new framing and matched board.

4

Reseal and re-test

Fittings go back on fresh sealant and we take the readings again, so you leave with proof it is dry.

07  —  Questions

Questions owners ask

It depends on how far the water has travelled. Resealing one rooflight is a small job; rebuilding a corner or a floor section is a larger one. We inspect first and quote before any work starts.

1-2 days for a straightforward reseal. Structural repairs take longer because the framework has to dry fully before it is closed up again.

Usually, for a short while. But the longer water sits in a wall, the more timber and board need replacing, so book a check as soon as you spot a sign.

Many policies treat gradual water ingress as wear and tear and exclude it, while damage from a storm or an impact may be covered. Check your policy wording.

Once a year is the usual guidance. A damp check is part of our habitation check, and it is worth having one before you buy or sell.

All makes of motorhomes, campervans and caravans, including Auto-Trail, Swift, Bailey, Elddis, Bürstner, Hymer, Adria, Coachman, Lunar, Benimar, Auto-Sleeper and Volkswagen California. If yours is not listed, just ask.

Yes. We remove the rooflight, clean off the old sealant, check the roof for damp and refit it with a fresh seal, from £220 per rooflight. If it is cracked or brittle, we can supply and fit a new one. More about rooflight reseals.

Yes. Our complete oversealing package protects your existing sealant and keeps water out, without removing windows, panels or fittings, so it costs far less than a full reseal. More about oversealing.

Our Mobile Workshop is equipped to do repairs at your home or storage facility.

What our customers say

Luke did a superb professional job fixing the wiring problems on our VW transporter and also installed a solar panel and two victron units. Very happy with the work and would certainly recommend this company!

Luke has recently completed a habitation service on our motorhome - fortunately he could fit us in at short notice. He is very knowledgeable, his work is very thorough and he provides a clear explanation of the work he does and the costs. During the service he spotted some issues with work that we had done a while ago - he suggested how these could be put right and we’ve booked him in to do this. We will definitely use Luke again and have no hesitation in recommending him.

I highly recommend Luke! I asked Luke for a habitation check on my camper. He was very efficient and he explained everything he found in detail. Luke is very friendly and helpful. He even managed to squeeze in an appointment, at short notice, for the habitation check due to me going away on holiday. Thank you Luke. Excellent service!
