02 — Why change the chargers
A lithium battery is only half the job
Fitting lithium without changing what charges it is the most common mistake we are asked to put right.
01
Your mains charger was made for lead-acid
Lead-acid and lithium need different charging voltages and stages. A lead-acid charger can leave a lithium battery part-charged, or hold it at a voltage it should not sit at.

A split-charge relay is just a switch
It connects the two batteries and lets current flow. Lithium accepts charge so readily that it can pull far more from the alternator than the wiring and alternator were designed for.

Smart alternators need a DC-DC charger
Many newer engines lower the alternator voltage to save fuel. Through a simple relay the leisure battery then barely charges at all. A DC-DC charger boosts and controls it.

Done together, it simply works
Battery, mains charger and DC-DC charger are chosen to match, set up as one system and tested, so you get the capacity and lifespan you paid for.

Questions owners ask
It will fit, but it will not be charged properly. The mains charger and the split-charge system in most vehicles were designed for lead-acid, so we change those at the same time.
In almost every vehicle, yes. It limits how much current the lithium battery draws from the alternator and charges it at the right voltage. On newer engines with smart alternators it is essential.
We replace it with a Victron charger that has a lithium profile, or bypass it where it is built into a power control unit. We tell you which applies to your vehicle when we quote.
It depends on what you run and how long you stay off hook-up. Tell us how you use the vehicle and we will work it out with you.
Yes, but the solar controller needs to be set for lithium, and some older controllers need replacing. We check it as part of the job.
Lithium batteries should not be charged when they are below freezing. The battery management we fit prevents that automatically, so you do not need to think about it.
It can, depending on the manufacturer. If your vehicle is still under warranty, check with your dealer before booking.
